Wear a flannel shirt.
Flannel shirts are the ultimate 90s throwback. If you want to get into the spirit without going all out, wear a flannel shirt buttoned up with jeans and some sneakers. For more of an urban vibe, try it unbuttoned over a t-shirt. Or tie it around your waist to make an interesting fashion statement!
Wear overalls.
- Wear overalls.
- If you’re not quite sure what a “70’s party” is, allow me to help: It’s a party that takes place in the 1970s. This means that you wear whatever clothes were popular at the time (hats, bell bottoms, and your favorite old concert tee). Overalls were also worn in the 70s—and I’m just going to go ahead and say it: You should definitely wear overalls for this party! They’re timeless—and if you get them from Urban Outfitters or Forever 21, they’ll probably be cheap too. Plus they’re comfortable as hell.*
Wear a plaid mini skirt.
A plaid mini skirt is a great way to show off your 90’s style without going too over the top. You can wear it with a solid-colored top, or layer it with a tank top and t-shirt. We love the idea of pairing this look with combat boots or Doc Martens!
You can find a plaid mini skirt at thrift stores, but if you’re not into that whole rustic vibe, try looking for one in bright colors like red or blue—they’ll really stand out in the crowd!
Wear chunky Doc Martens.
Doc Martens are a type of shoe that were popular in the 90s. They are known for their chunky, thick soles and ankle-high design. You can find them at your local thrift shop or online on sites like Etsy or eBay (just make sure they’re authentic).
If you’re looking to dress up your doc martens, wear them with ripped jeans and grungy t-shirts. These styles will help you channel the 90s aesthetic without being too try-hard about it.
Wear combat boots.
If you’re planning on attending a 90’s-themed party, we recommend dressing in combat boots. Combat boots were popular during this time period and can add a punk rock element to your outfit if you wear them with something like jeans and a t-shirt. Additionally, combat boots can be worn with many different types of clothing other than jeans: skirts and dresses are both great options as well!
There are many stores that sell combat boots in any color you could possibly want. This means that they will match with almost anything in your wardrobe! You can also find them in all sorts of styles—from ankle-highs to knee-highs (or even thigh high!) Whatever style best fits your tastes is what we recommend wearing when going out for this event.
Wear Birkenstocks.
- Birkenstocks are a must for any 90’s party. Wearing Birkenstocks and not having socks with them is a faux pas, so make sure you have plenty on hand.
- There are many different types of Birkenstock sandals to choose from, but the most popular are leather or rubber. You can find these in most shoe stores and online retailers too!
- Just remember to wear socks with your new pair of Birkenstocks!
Wear platform shoes.
Platform shoes are the key to standing out at a 90s party. They come in all shapes and sizes, but you will want to wear a pair that stands out from the crowd.
There are many different styles of platform shoes: heels, sneakers, boots, wedges and sandals. Each one comes with its own set of rules for wearing them. For example with heels you should always wear thicker socks because they can be uncomfortable if you don’t wear them.
Platform sandals are great for casual parties as they provide more support than flip-flops but aren’t too dressy that they can’t be worn out on weekends!
You may also find yourself wondering where to buy these trendy shoes? Well luckily there are plenty of places online where you can find ones that fit your budget!
Wear a velvet jumpsuit.
Velvet is a fabric that was very popular in the 90s. It doesn’t have to be a jumpsuit, but if you’re going for that retro look and are already choosing to wear velvet pants, why not go all out?
Velvet has recently been making a comeback in fashion and interior design. If you’re looking for some inspiration on how to wear this trend, check out these velvet jumpsuits from ASOS (one of my favorite online retailers). You can find pieces from their Velvet collection here: https://www.asos.com/women/velvet-collection/. I’ve included links so that you can see each item in more detail if one catches your eye!
I would recommend accessorizing with some gold jewelry or earrings because gold tends to complement the reddish color palette of most velvets and will make your outfit pop even more! You could also consider wearing some lace gloves or stockings with lace ruffles on them as another way to incorporate those 90s vibes into your look while still staying true to yourself!
Wear a babydoll dress or top.
There are many options for what you can wear to a 90’s party. If you want to look like you stepped out of the 1990s, choose a babydoll dress or top. In the 1990s, these two styles were very popular among women. Babydoll dresses and tops have short sleeves and usually have a full skirt that comes down to your knees (or sometimes longer). You may be able to find some with ruffles around the hemline on both dresses and tops.
You can wear either style with leggings if you want to complete your look with more than just one piece of clothing from the era!
Wear acid-wash jeans or clothing with acid wash patterns.
Acid wash jeans are also a popular choice for a 90’s party. This type of denim is characterized by its light blue color, faded appearance and distressed texture. Acid-washed clothing became popular in the 1980s and 1990s, especially among youths who wanted to look cool without spending too much money on clothes. If you want to wear acid wash jeans or other clothing with similar patterns, visit your local thrift store or vintage shop!
Accessorize with hair clips or scrunchies in your hair and/or on your wrists (they make great bracelets).
If you’re looking for a way to add some extra spice to your outfit, consider accessorizing with hair clips or scrunchies in your hair and/or on your wrists (they make great bracelets). Hair clips are a great way to add color and style, while scrunchies can help keep thick hair from getting too messy.
Don’t forget to rock some 90’s music!
- 90’s music. To complete your look, throw on some classics from the decade. You can’t go wrong with Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots or the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
- The clothing you wear to an ’90s party will make a statement about what kind of person you are—and whether or not it’s okay for us to talk about how much we love “Closing Time” by Semisonic anymore!
