Here are some ideas for celebrating Chinese New Year:
Visit your local Asian market and stock up on ingredients needed to make traditional Chinese dishes. You’ll want to have plenty of rice and noodles on hand in addition to ginger, garlic and other spices.

Plan ahead for your celebration so that you don’t run out of food or drink too early in the evening. If you’re hosting a large group at home, you may want to consider hiring a caterer who can provide a variety of different cuisines that will appeal to everyone in attendance.

- Go to a parade or watch one on TV.
- Make a lantern or paper dragon, and then watch it float away.
- Learn how to write your name in Chinese characters.
- Make dumplings together (you can find recipes online).
- Visit your local Chinese restaurant and order dishes at random (just be sure not to order anything that’s spicy!).
- Get thee to an Asian grocery store and buy ingredients for making buns, noodles and dumplings of all kinds (and get some chopsticks while you’re at it).

Chinese New Year Activities for Kids
Make red envelopes (or “lucky money”) with your kids by folding a piece of paper in half lengthwise and cutting out a triangle from the middle to make it look like an envelope. Fill it with money (paper currency or coins) or small trinkets like stickers or small toys. Give these out to friends and family members during Chinese New Year celebrations.
Decorate eggs with bright colors using markers or paint pens before boiling them in water for 15 minutes to hard-boil them so they can be used as decorations later on during the parade or celebration at school or home. You can also use a needle to poke holes around their tops so you can string ribbon through them when they’re dry!
