It’s that time of year again! You know, the one where all your social media feeds are being inundated with holiday-themed content. And while it’s nice to see people sharing their favorite movies and TV shows for the season, there’s a good chance those recommendations are making you feel even more overwhelmed by all the options out there. The truth is, there are more great Christmas movies than you might think—you just have to look beyond the obvious choices (Home Alone, Elf). So if you’re looking for something new to watch this year, try one of these underrated gems instead:
The Bishop’s Wife
The Bishop’s Wife is a real gem. Starring Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven, it tells the story of a bishop who must find out why his wife has been acting strangely and stop her from killing herself. The film was first released in 1947 and directed by Henry Koster. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Story when it was released and has since been considered one of the best Christmas movies of all time.
The movie is available on Netflix Instant Watch!
Trading Places
Trading Places (1983) is a comedy about two men who get mixed up in a bet to see if they can change the lives of two other men. The movie stars Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, and it was directed by John Landis.
The plot revolves around Winthorpe (played by Eddie Murphy) and Duke (played by Dan Aykroyd), who are business partners running an illegal commodities operation. They find out that their boss has cheated them out of millions of dollars, so they steal back what’s rightfully theirs—but only after using another employee’s identity card as leverage against him. Things start to go wrong when Winthorpe and Duke end up trading places with their victims; now they have no choice but to suffer through whatever punishment comes next!
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” is a 2005 crime comedy directed by Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer, Michelle Monaghan and Corbin Bernsen. The movie is based on the book by Brett Halliday and follows Harry Lockhart (Downey) who teams up with an actor named Perry van Shrike (Kilmer) to find out who killed his friend Harmony while they’re in Los Angeles working on Perry’s new screenplay.
The movie was released on Christmas Day in 2005 and has received mostly positive reviews from critics as well as being nominated for several awards including best original screenplay at the 2005 Academy Awards.
Force Majeure
Force Majeure is a 2014 Swedish film about a family on vacation in the French Alps. As an avalanche threatens their safety, the husband and wife argue about whether to stay or leave. The movie is funny, tense, and beautifully shot—and it has a lot to say about how we perceive masculinity (or lack thereof).
This movie is perfect for anyone who loves nature documentaries or thrillers set in exotic locations. Plus it’s got some great chemistry between its two leads: Oscar-nominated Alicia Vikander as Lena and her real-life husband Michael Fassbender as Tomas—who may not be as together as he seems when things get dicey on their ski trip.
Die Hard
If you’re looking for a movie to watch on Christmas, you need to try Die Hard. This 1988 action-comedy is one of the best movies ever made, and it’s perfect to watch while sitting around the fireplace with your family on Christmas morning.
Die Hard stars Bruce Willis as John McClane and Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber, two men who meet face-to-face in an office building during Christmastime. Their roles in this film are so iconic that they are often imitated or parodied in other movies and TV shows.
The story follows McClane as he tries to save his estranged wife Holly Gennero McClane from being held hostage by terrorists led by Hans Gruber (Rickman). The movie also features Reginald VelJohnson as Officer Powell and Bonnie Bedelia as Holly Gennero McClane
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Kevin McCallister, the protagonist of Home Alone, is back for another adventure. This time around, he and his family are traveling to New York City over Christmas when they get stuck in an airport because of a blizzard. Being the resourceful kid that he is, Kevin tries to sneak onto their next flight on his own with help from his friend Rob (the same guy who helped him escape from the Wet Bandits in the first film). But this time around Rob isn’t able to help him right away—he’s not even at the airport! So what’s a young boy with no money and no passport going to do?
Luckily Kevin has some great ideas up his sleeve that’ll keep him safe while also giving us some laughs along the way.
If you liked watching Home Alone growing up or if you’re looking for something fun for your kids this holiday season, then I highly recommend checking out Home Alone 2: Lost In New York!
Edward Scissorhands
This movie is perfect for the family that wants to enjoy some holiday-themed cinema, but doesn’t want to feel like they’re watching a kid’s movie. Edward Scissorhands is dark, quirky and funny all at once. It’s directed by Tim Burton and stars Johnny Depp as the titular character. The film follows Edward as he tries to fit into society after being created by an inventor who dies before finishing his work on him.
Edward Scissorhands also won an Oscar for Best Makeup in 1990—proving that it’s not just your run-of-the-mill Christmas flick!
Gremlins
Gremlins is a classic 80s movie that is definitely worth watching on Christmas. It’s about a boy who gets a pet that turns into a monster. It’s both funny and scary, so it will appeal to people of all ages. Zach Galligan plays the main character and Phoebe Cates stars as his girlfriend Kate. Joe Dante directed the film, which was released in 1984.
Elf
If you’ve ever wondered what Santa Claus looks like close up, Elf is the movie for you. The film follows Buddy (Will Ferrell), a human raised by elves who stumbles into New York City. He quickly gets caught up in the hustle and bustle of Christmas, and he teaches his new friends about their unique traditions along the way.
Buddy’s adventures are lighthearted and humorous but also sincere—he discovers that Christmas means something different to everyone, but at the core of it all is a sense of joy and hope that bonds everyone together as one family.
The movie also has some great music: classics like “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” sit alongside original songs by James Taylor (“Somedays”), Harry Connick Jr (“Santa Baby”), Chris Colfer (the Glee star who plays Kurt Hummel).
There are more good Christmas movies than you think.
There are more good Christmas movies than you think. Here’s the proof:
- Netflix has a whole section of Christmas movies, so if you have an account with them, check it out! They have everything from The Holiday to A Christmas Prince to Mary Poppins Returns (which is a great one), and there are other good ones too.
- YouTube has some really great holiday-themed videos as well—and they’re free! You can watch How The Grinch Stole Christmas on YouTube anytime you want!
- Amazon Prime has some options for those who want to watch movies off their computer or phone—but not everyone wants that type of experience when they’re at home watching TV with their family over the holidays. You can find these titles by searching through their website though.

What is considered the best Christmas movie ever?
Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays in the world. It is a time when we get together with our families and share our love for one another. Christmas is also a time when we can watch some of our favorite movies. From classic to new, there are plenty of great Christmas movies to watch during this holiday season.
What is considered the best Christmas movie ever? The Grinch (1966) has always been a favorite at our house, but it’s not my top pick. My favorite holiday movie is It’s A Wonderful Life (1946) because it shows how important family, friends and good cheer are to having a happy life.
I think that every family should have their own favorite Christmas movie they watch every year on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. It helps bring everyone together and makes the holiday season even more special than it already is!
What is the most watched movie during Christmas?
Christmas is a time for family and friends, but it’s also a time for movies.
The most watched movie during Christmas is the classic “It’s A Wonderful Life,” according to data from Rentrak.
The 1946 film was first shown on television in 1954 and has been broadcast every year since then. It’s one of the most beloved movies of all time, with an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
“It’s A Wonderful Life” stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man whose life seems like it would have been better if he had never been born. But when he gets the chance to see what his town would have looked like if he hadn’t existed, he realizes how important he truly is. It’s a heartwarming story that reminds us all that we’re never alone on Christmas.
What is a Christmas movie that’s not a Christmas movie?
Christmas movies are great. They’re a staple of the holiday season, and they’re hard to avoid. But what if you want to watch something else?
Christmas is a time for reflection, family, and friendship. It’s also a time for watching movies! The problem is that Christmas movies tend to be pretty similar: they’re all about snow and Santa Claus, and they all feature carolers or a Christmas tree or some other symbol of Christmas. So what’s an aspiring cinephile supposed to do?
Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered with our list of criminally underrated Christmas movies that aren’t actually about Christmas at all!
Conclusion
If you are looking for a fun, lighthearted, holiday movie to watch this Christmas season, these movies are perfect! They aren’t all super serious or tear-jerking like most of the classic classics. Some of them even include humor and action which makes them appropriate for everyone in the family. If you don’t want anything too intense then these will definitely be perfect choices—they have everything from romance to comedy so there are no worries about finding something suitable for everyone.
